چکیده

In previous experiments,2 an unsuccessful attempt was made to acclimate monkey cord virus to white rats, which had been made completely vitamin B1 deficient by feeding them a vitamin B1 free diet for 30 days prior to the start of the experiment. It was thought that our failure might have been due to the fact that we did not have the animals in a proper state or stage of deficiency; perhaps the animals might have been continued on the diet for too long a period. Further experiments were planned in which the vitamin B, intake was varied.

The Effect of Vitamin B1 Deficiency and of Restricted Food Intake on the Response of Mice to the Lansing Strain of Poliomyelitis Virus

In several experiments it was shown that a deficiency of vitamin B(1) in the diet increased the resistance of mice to the Lansing strain of poliomyelitis. The source of the virus was a suspension of infected mouse brain in saline, which was injected intracerebrally. Both the mortality rate and the incidence of paralysis were lower in the deficient animals than in the normally fed controls. The ...

The Comparative Effects of Vitamin B1 Deficiency and Restriction of Food Intake on the Response of Mice to the Lansing Strain of Poliomyelitis Virus, as Determined by the Paired Feeding Technique

In a paired feeding experiment the effects of vitamin B(1) deficiency and of restriction of food intake have been compared. In both groups of animals the number of cases of paralysis and the number of deaths were less than in a control group on an unrestricted amount of the complete diet. The maximum difference occurred on the 15th day after inoculation. The incidence of paralysis and death in ...

Some Effects Produced by Long-Continued Subminimal Intakes of Vitamin B1 *

The earlier literature on the pathology produced experimentally with diets lacking vitamin B (for the most part the undifferentiated vitamin B complex) has been reviewed by Zimmerman and Burack.'5 Their review may be summed up briefly as follows: Myelin degeneration in peripheral nerves, and sometimes in the spinal cord, has been described by many workers as occurring in several species of labo...

Observations on the Factor Curative of Nutritional Achromotrichia

In rats kept on a basal diet deficient in vitamin B and supplemented with vitamin B1, riboflavin, and vitamin Be cutaneous lesions may appear which, in several instances, may become severe and even genera1ized.l In the same group of rats fur alterations also can be observed in the form of depigmentation (“graying”) in piebald or black animals and of “rusting” in albino animals. These fur change...

Vitamin B1 Deficiency Does not Affect the Liver Concentrations of the Other Seven Kinds of B-Group Vitamins in Rats

We aimed to determine the effects of vitamin B1 deficiency on vitamin contents of urine, liver, and blood. In the current study, rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 5, each group): the first was freely fed a complete diet (ad lib-fed control group); the second freely fed a vitamin B1-free diet (vitamin B1 deficient group); and the third pair-fed a complete diet with the same amounts of the vit...
